We often meet clients with these concerns.
When at-home color and bleaching are repeated over time, chemical stress can gradually accumulate throughout the hair.
That can make people understandably nervous about adding another chemical service such as hair straightening.
Today, we would like to introduce a client who regularly colors her gray roots at home and also has a history of bleaching.
We treated her hair with Coconut Hair Straightening®︎.
Does Repeated At-Home Hair Color Make Straightening More Difficult?
At a professional salon, the color formula and application can be adjusted according to the condition of the hair.
At-home color products, on the other hand, are designed to give reliable coloring results for a wide range of users, which means the same type of formula may repeatedly be applied to areas that have already been colored.
Over time, this can lead to accumulated stress.
At the same time, gray hair continues to grow every month.
Some clients choose to touch up their roots at home because waiting until the next salon appointment is difficult or because frequent salon visits are not always practical.
When repeated home coloring is combined with bleaching or previous hair straightening, the condition of the roots, mid-lengths, and ends can become very different.
This does not mean:
“At-home color means you cannot get hair straightening.”
The more important question is:
Where has damage accumulated, and how much strength remains in each section of the hair?
The Client’s Hair Before Treatment
This client had been coloring her gray roots at home every month.
She also had a large amount of previously bleached hair, so chemical stress had accumulated throughout the length.
The ends showed noticeable:
- Dryness
- Tangling
- Split ends
- Rough and fragile areas
However, when we examined the hair carefully, including its condition when wet, the Coconut Hair Straightening®︎ performed approximately one year earlier was still remaining beautifully through the ends.
This meant that the ends did not need to be strongly straightened again.
The hair had two very different conditions:
- Around one year of newly grown wavy hair at the roots
- Previously straightened, chemically treated hair through the ends
For this reason, we approached the two areas differently.
We Straightened the New Growth Without Reprocessing the Ends
For the newly grown roots, we used Coconut Hair Straightening®︎ to properly correct the waves.
Through the ends, where the previous straightening was still effective, we focused only on improving the texture with treatment ingredients.
We did not repeatedly apply unnecessary chemical strength or heat to sections that were already straight.
This is an important part of protecting the hair.
Hair straightening does not always mean applying the same treatment from roots to ends every time.
Sometimes, the best technical decision is knowing where not to add more chemical stress.
Protecting the Hair Is Also Part of the Stylist’s Job
Once hair has been chemically damaged, it cannot naturally return to its original condition.
For this reason, at melco we believe that protecting the hair from unnecessary additional stress is just as important as straightening the waves.
After the treatment, the newly grown waves around the roots were smoother and the overall hairstyle settled more naturally.
Because the ends were not unnecessarily reprocessed, they retained softness, flexibility, and natural-looking shine.
The hair also became easier to manage simply by blow-drying.
This can help make everyday life easier by reducing concerns such as:
- Spending too much time styling in the morning
- Hair expanding again in humid weather
- Dryness making the hair look rough
- Difficulty combing through the ends
At-Home Color and Bleached Hair Do Not Automatically Mean You Must Give Up Hair Straightening
Hair with repeated home color, bleaching, and previous straightening requires careful assessment.
However, that does not mean hair straightening is automatically impossible.
The important thing is to understand the condition of each section and avoid treating the entire head as if every area were the same.
