Good evening from melco HairDesign Okinawa!
“My hair looks fairly smooth on the surface, but when I lift it up, the underneath is very wavy.”
“My hair looks fine right after blow-drying, but after a while, it starts to puff up from underneath.”
This is a surprisingly common concern.
Even if the surface of the hair does not appear very curly, waves underneath the hair can push the outer layers upward and make the entire hairstyle look larger and more difficult to manage.
Today, we would like to introduce a client who was concerned about strong waves underneath the hair and dryness through the ends.
We treated her hair with Coconut Hair Straightening®︎.

Strong Waves Underneath and Dryness Through the Ends
At first glance, this client did not have particularly strong waves on the surface.
However, when we lifted the hair, noticeable waves were present underneath, especially around the lower sides and back of the head.
Her hair was relatively fine and soft.
Because she also colored her hair every month, the mid-lengths and ends had accumulated chemical stress and were more prone to dryness and roughness.
Fine, soft hair can be more sensitive to strong chemicals and unnecessary heat.
For this reason, it was important to straighten the waves underneath properly while avoiding additional stress on the already delicate ends.
We Check the Hair Underneath, Not Just the Surface
In this case, the overall volume was not caused only by surface frizz.
The stronger waves underneath were lifting the outer layers of the hair, creating extra volume even after blow-drying.
When this happens, improving only the surface texture may not make a significant difference if the underlying waves remain.
For this client, we carefully straightened the waves from the roots through the mid-lengths while treating the repeatedly colored ends more conservatively.
We evaluated the roots, mid-lengths, and ends separately and adjusted:
- Chemical strength
- Application method
- Heat application
- Iron technique
according to the condition of each area.
Combined With Our Recrystallization Treatment
For this appointment, we combined Coconut Hair Straightening®︎ with our Recrystallization Treatment.
The areas with noticeable waves received hair straightening, while the dry and rough ends were treated primarily to improve their condition and texture.
Rather than applying strong straightening chemicals all the way through the ends, we separated the areas that required straightening from the areas where care was the priority.
Maintaining the naturally soft texture of the client’s fine hair was also an important part of this treatment.

Smoother Underneath, Softer Through the Ends
After the treatment, the waves underneath the hair became much smoother, allowing the overall hairstyle to settle more naturally.
Instead of simply flattening the surface, reducing the volume from underneath created a cleaner, more balanced silhouette from the back.
The ends were not made unnaturally straight or stiff.
We maintained their softness while improving overall manageability.
By combining the service with our Recrystallization Treatment, the dry areas also felt smoother to the touch, with a natural-looking shine through the ends.
Because the hair now falls into place more easily after blow-drying, the client can also reduce the amount of time spent using a flat iron every morning.
If Your Hair Is Wavy Only Underneath
Waves and curls do not always appear evenly throughout the entire head.
Some people have relatively straight hair on the surface but stronger waves underneath, around the nape, or through the inner sections.
These hidden waves can still create significant volume and frizz.
If the ends have also accumulated damage from repeated coloring, it is important not to treat the entire hair with exactly the same strength.
At melco HairDesign Okinawa, we do not evaluate only what can be seen from the surface.
We lift and examine the hair underneath, check the condition of the ends, and identify where the waves are actually coming from.
We then separate the areas that need to be properly straightened from the areas that should be treated more carefully.
If you are thinking:
“My hair looks straight on top, but the underneath is always wavy.”
or
“I want hair straightening, but I’m worried about damage through my ends.”
Please feel free to consult with us.
We will carefully assess your current hair condition and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
