“I have inner bleach, but can I still get hair straightening?”
“I want to straighten my frizz, but I’m worried about causing more damage to my hair.”
We often receive these kinds of questions from clients who have bleached hair.
The hair around the face and nape tends to show stronger waves and frizz, so many people feel torn between wanting to reduce daily manageability issues and worrying about putting additional stress on bleached sections.
This time, we performed Coconut Hair Straightening® on a client who had undergone bleaching twice on the inner sections of her hair.
Hair Condition Before the Treatment
This client had medium-thickness hair with a slightly soft texture.
She had stronger waves around the face and nape, while the inner sections had been bleached twice.
Her main concern was:
“I want to straighten my hair properly, but I’m worried about damaging the bleached sections.”
Bleached hair is generally more sensitive to chemical treatments and heat than untreated hair.
For that reason, it is important not to treat the bleached and non-bleached sections in exactly the same way, but to assess each area separately based on its current condition.
What Matters When Straightening Bleached Hair
Hair straightening uses not only chemical products, but also heat from a flat iron to reshape the hair.
At melco, we do not only consider:
“How strong should the chemical solution be?”
We also look carefully at:
“How much chemical and heat can this hair safely tolerate in its current condition?”
For this client, the stronger waves around the face and nape were not treated under the same conditions as the bleached sections.
We used the amount of strength necessary to straighten the areas that needed it, while adjusting the process so that the already-stressed bleached sections were not exposed to more chemical or heat than necessary.
Adjusting Not Only the Chemicals, but Also the Heat
With Coconut Hair Straightening®, we assess both the strength of the hair and the strength of the wave or curl before selecting the chemical formula.
We also carefully control the ironing process, including the thickness of each hair section and the amount of time heat is applied.
At melco, we use a dedicated app and timer to manage heat application, rather than relying only on intuition or feel.
Even when the goal is to straighten strong waves, applying more heat than necessary does not always lead to a better result.
We focus on using the amount of heat the hair actually needs while preserving softness and elasticity as much as possible.
Smoother, More Manageable Hair Around the Face and Nape
After the treatment, the waves around the face and nape became much calmer, and the hair was easier to manage from roots to ends.
Rather than creating an overly stiff or pin-straight finish, we adjusted the treatment so that the ends would still retain a soft, natural feel.
Because both the surface and inner sections of the hair became easier to control, overall volume was reduced and daily styling became easier as well.
One of the key points of this treatment was straightening the areas that needed it while avoiding unnecessary stress on the bleached sections.
With Bleached Hair, the Initial Assessment Is Especially Important
Having bleached hair does not automatically mean that hair straightening is impossible.
At the same time, it does not mean that every type of bleached hair can safely undergo straightening.
The treatment options will vary depending on factors such as how many times the hair has been bleached, which areas have been bleached, the current level of damage, and any previous color, straightening, or perm treatments.
In some cases, we may decide not to force the hair completely straight in a single session.
