We often receive these kinds of consultations.
Highlighted hair is generally more sensitive than non-bleached hair and can be more easily affected by both chemicals and heat.
For this reason, it is important not to focus only on straightening the hair, but to carefully evaluate the condition of each section before treatment.
Today, we would like to introduce a client who received Coconut Hair Straightening®︎ about one month after having highlights.
Dryness in the Highlighted Areas and Strong Waves Underneath
This client had highlights applied about one month before visiting us.
Dryness caused by bleaching was noticeable around the ends and in the layered sections near the surface.
At first glance, the waves on the surface did not appear extremely strong.
However, underneath the hair, especially below the widest part of the head, there were much stronger waves.
These inner waves were pushing the outer layers upward, creating unwanted volume and making the overall hair easier to frizz and expand.
In this type of situation, treating only the surface dryness may improve the texture temporarily, but the overall volume can remain difficult to control if the stronger waves underneath are still present.
At the same time, applying the same strong chemicals or heat uniformly over highlighted hair can place unnecessary stress on the bleached sections.
For this client, it was especially important to treat the strongly wavy areas and the more fragile highlighted areas differently.
Adjusting the Treatment for Highlighted and Wavy Areas
With Coconut Hair Straightening®︎, we do not use the same formula and technique on every part of the hair.
We carefully evaluate factors such as:
- Highlighted or bleached sections
- Damage around the ends and surface layers
- The strength of the waves underneath
- Hair thickness and elasticity
Based on these differences, we adjust the chemical strength, application method, iron temperature, heat exposure, and tension applied to the hair.
For this client, we properly straightened the stronger waves underneath while minimizing unnecessary stress on the highlighted sections.
Hair straightening on bleached hair is not simply a matter of choosing a weaker chemical formula.
Even a mild formula can cause stress if it is left on too long or combined with excessive heat.
The entire process needs to be carefully balanced according to the current condition of the hair.
Combined With Our Recrystallization Treatment
For this appointment, we also combined Coconut Hair Straightening®︎ with our Recrystallization Treatment.
We focused on improving the feel of the ends where dryness from highlighting was particularly noticeable, helping the hair feel smoother and easier to comb through.
After the treatment, the stronger waves underneath were significantly reduced, and the surface dryness became less noticeable.
Rather than creating a stiff, overly straight result, the hair remained soft and natural while keeping the dimensional look of the highlights.
Because the inner sections settled more smoothly, the overall volume also became much easier to manage after blow-drying.
Can You Continue Highlights and Hair Straightening Together?
Depending on the condition of the hair, it may be possible to perform hair straightening even when highlights or bleached sections are present.
However, not every head of hair can be treated in the same way.
We carefully consider factors such as:
- How many times the hair has been bleached
- How light the hair has become
- Remaining elasticity in the ends
- Whether there is any breakage
- Previous chemical treatment history
- The strength and location of the waves
In some cases, rather than straightening every section completely in one appointment, we may recommend improving the hair gradually over several sessions.
